Transform the attic into a piggy bank
(NC)—Increasing attic insulation can help significantly reduce heating and cooling expenses.

Here are five easy steps to help get you on your way to warmer winters and cooler summers.

1. Make sure you are working in a well-lit area and walking and kneeling on something solid and safe to support your weight. Wear appropriate safety gear such as safety glasses, a mask, gloves and long-sleeved, loose fitting clothing.

2. Before adding insulation to your attic, you need to determine how much insulation (R-value) is already there. Measure the thickness of the existing insulation and refer to Owens Corning Canada's web site to look up the corresponding thermal resistance. Many older homes have between 3.5" to 6" of insulation yielding an R-value of R-12 to R-20. Adding an extra thickness of insulation will help significantly reduce energy consumption. Typical insulation levels in newly built homes across Canada range from R-30 to R-50, so make sure you are familiar with your regional Building Code requirements.

3. Fill the empty space between the ceiling rafters or roof trusses by adding the appropriate thickness of insulation over top of existing layer in the same direction. Lay additional layers of insulation perpendicular to the existing layers. Start at outer edges of roof area and work towards the centre.

4. Make sure the insulation doesn't block the ventilation space leading up through the soffits at the edges of the roof. If needed, install raft-R-mate Attic/Rafter Vents to keep this area unobstructed. Proper attic ventilation can prevent condensation and ice build up in the attic and can help prolong the life of your roof.

5. Provide clearances required by Codes and Regulations between the insulation and heat-emitting objects such as chimneys, pipes and conduits and use insulated boxes for recessed lighting fixtures

Of course, if you don't want to do this yourself, hiring a professional is a viable option. PROPINK Blown Glass Fibre insulation can be installed by a professional applicator using specialized equipment.
