Decorators choosing to "Go Green" for colour in 2007
In the past, global warming and the environment were not always top of mind with most Canadian. But with the recent effects we've experienced with climate change coupled with the devastating tragedies related to tropical storms around the world, people are now taking notice.
(NC)—In the past, global warming and the environment were not always top of mind with most Canadian. But with the recent effects we've experienced with climate change coupled with the devastating tragedies related to tropical storms around the world, people are now taking notice.

As a result, more and more Canadians are increasingly sensitive to the environment and show a stronger desire for preserving our resources and recycling. Countless corporations are following suit by incorporating "green" philosophies to their regular marketing strategies and product offerings.

This "green" trend has even made an impact in home decorating with consumers and decorators now gravitating to a more back-to-basics colour palette for interior décor inspired by Mother Nature.

Dominique Pépin, Senior Brand Manager of Sico and a Chairholder of the international colour forecaster Color Marketing Group, explains this trend. "People want to bring some balance to their hectic lifestyles and are looking to nature to find it."

To answer this trend, the 2007 paint colour palette is highlighted by rich, deep and soothing tones, selected from nature.

One of the colours leading the way is green itself. Reflecting the growing interest in organics and eco-friendly products, the new palette is filled with a range of natural greens inspired by nature's foliage. This year's greens are cooler than in years past, taking on a blue and grassy base that promotes a calming environmental influence. The year ahead will see greater use of dark, rich and botanical greens such as Sico's Mermaid's Eye (6200-63), Zen Green (6168-73), and Marjoram (6141-31), according to Pépin.

Another colour rising in prominence from this organic palette is brown. Purple-infused dark browns will be especially popular, Pépin adds. "These new trendy colours are inspired by the increasing popularity of dark exotic woods." Sico's most recent brown offerings for this year: Heart of Bronze (6234-83) and Cloak (6232-83) are ideal when used as contrasts with soft pastels or red, orange and chartreuse. Another trend to look for is the growing use of browns mixed with greys. More information on trends in paint colors and decorating are available at sico.ca.
