Spring clean your sleep habits |
It's that time of year again… annual spring cleaning time has arrived. A time to re-assess our clothing, our junk piles, plan a garage sale and tidy up our lives. But it's also a chance to assess our sleep habits too.
(NC)—It's that time of year again… annual spring cleaning time has arrived. A time to re-assess our clothing, our junk piles, plan a garage sale and tidy up our lives. But it's also a chance to assess our sleep habits too. Since we spend one third of our lives sleeping, we might as well get the best quality sleep!
Our beds can be a high traffic zone of activity that includes eating and drinking, playing with our pets and kids, and working and watching television. Sleep plays such a critical role in our health and well-being that neglecting the health of your mattress is like neglecting your own. Here are some tips to make sure yours is still giving you the comfort and quality sleep you deserve.
Practice good mattress care:
• Clear your bed surface of books, remote controls, work, food and drink, and pets;
• Avoid dropping heavy items onto your mattress;
• Keep your mattress clean by vacuuming monthly with an attachment (to suck up dust mites and debris) and spot cleaning spills and stains with water;
• Evaluate the state of your mattress and foundation twice a year by looking for these simple ABC's:
3 A – Age: has your mattress had more than eight to 10 years of nightly use?
3 B – Beauty: would you be embarrassed to show your uncovered mattress in public? Does it have stains, soils or tears? Does it sag?
3 C – Comfort: does it have the same comfort and support as it did when you first tried it at the store?
• For the best support and comfort, replace your mattress every 8 to 10 years;
